Week 1 Theory to Practice Essay

I'm sure today was a eye opening day for me and other classmates. The atmosphere in class today promoted a different learning environment, one I am not too familiar with. Our instructor kept us engaged and busy from beginning to end with useful activities and assignments. Were constantly reminded of our main goal/task and the deadline.

Today's class was most interesting and exciting when we were given the task of creating a concept map and posting it to our class wiki page. Most of us were not familiar with a concept and had absolutely no clue on how to post the picture of the map on our class wiki page. Our instructor used a unique technique way of teaching us how to complete this task without really teaching us at all. She gave us our task and what the end result should be. With little to almost no detailed examples we were able to learn how to take a photo to out wiki page. This style of learning encouraged out Intel team to think to together and feed off of out prior knowledge. In the end, we were all able to complete the task from useful skills we all brought to the table.

Our instructor also made very clear the expectations for her course and the way she approaches learning. In most traditional classrooms, students are required to raise their hands, ask for permissions and hide undesirable behaviors. Our instructor made clear her class would be run differently allowing for behaviors that would not be allowed in other classrooms. This method of teaching created a different approach to learning for me. We learned key concepts in her class nontraditionally, but with the same outcome of a regular classroom.

Leaving here today, I can understand that learning is achieved in many ways both typical and atypical.

  2. Special Education centers on providing alternative routes to learning for the exceptional students. A specific examples of typical and atypical learning in Special Education can be described through the use the use of computers in the classroom. In most typical classrooms, computer are only used for fun activities, entertainment purposes and an incentive to good behavior. In special education classrooms, computers are normally used a supplemental devices and for some students, the main devices for learning. Students with special needs can range in disabilities, but the computer provides many alternative routes to learning for all students. Web 2.0 tools are perfect examples of atypical ways of learning seen in classrooms. Web 2.0 tools include, classroom wiki pages, smart boards, voice and audio tools and so much more. These new and innovative tools are slowly be introduced into classroom in order to provide optional ways of learning to all types students.
